SEO can sound far more mysterious than it needs to.
At its simplest, search engine optimisation means helping search engines understand your website while making the website useful to the people searching for your services.
There is, however, an important difference between:
- building a website with good SEO foundations, and
- providing an ongoing SEO service.
They are not the same thing.
What is foundational SEO?
Foundational SEO is the basic work that should ideally be considered when your website is built.
It includes things such as:
Page titles
Each important page should have a useful, descriptive title.
A service page about kitchen fitting should not simply be called:
Services
A more useful title could identify the actual service and location where appropriate.
Meta descriptions
A meta description is descriptive information associated with a webpage that search engines may use when displaying results.
It should summarise the page accurately and give potential visitors a reason to click.
Proper headings
Pages should have a logical structure.
Usually there is one clear main heading followed by useful subheadings that break the content into understandable sections.
This helps visitors scan the page and provides structure to the content.
Clean URLs
Compare:
business.co.uk/services/plumbing/
with:
business.co.uk/page?id=48726
Clear page addresses are easier for people to understand and easier to manage.
Image alt text
Meaningful images should have useful alternative text where appropriate.
This helps with accessibility and gives additional context about images.
Internal links
Pages should connect logically.
An article explaining boiler maintenance, for example, might naturally link to the company’s boiler-servicing page.
This helps visitors find relevant information and helps search engines understand relationships between pages.
Sitemap
A sitemap provides information about pages available on the site.
Google recommends sitemap submission (opens in a new tab) as one method of keeping it informed about website URLs.
Google Search Console
Search Console (opens in a new tab) helps website owners understand whether Google can index their website and provides information about search performance.
Technical accessibility to search engines
It sounds obvious, but a website should not accidentally block important pages from search engines.
That means checking things such as:
- robots settings
- noindex settings
- broken pages
- broken internal links
- redirects
Is foundational SEO enough?
That depends what you mean by "enough".
If you mean:
"Is this enough to launch the website properly?"
For many small businesses, yes.
A website should not launch with basic SEO configuration ignored.
If you mean:
"Will this automatically put me at the top of Google?"
No.
And nobody should promise that it will.
Ongoing SEO is different
Competitive search visibility can involve ongoing work such as:
- Keyword research
- New service content
- Useful articles
- Local landing pages
- Technical improvements
- Google Business Profile optimisation
- Earning reputable links and mentions
- Updating existing content
- Competitor research
- Performance monitoring
How much of that a business needs depends on the market.
A plumber competing across a major city faces a very different search landscape from a highly specialised local consultant.
Good SEO starts with useful content
Technical configuration cannot compensate for a website that says very little.
Google’s own SEO guidance (opens in a new tab) focuses heavily on creating useful content and making it straightforward for search engines to access and understand it.
Your website should therefore explain:
- What you do
- Who you help
- Where you work
- Your individual services
- Why customers might choose you
- Common customer questions
Don’t build a website for a search engine
SEO matters.
But customers are the people who ultimately buy from you.
A page stuffed unnaturally with repeated keywords may technically mention the right phrase 30 times, but it may also make the business look terrible.
The best foundation is normally a website that is clear and genuinely useful first, with sensible technical SEO supporting it.
Foundational SEO at The Business Workshop
Foundational SEO is included as part of The Business Workshop Standard because I don’t believe a new website should start with those basic elements deliberately left undone.
Ongoing SEO is a separate service because it involves ongoing work.
That distinction means you can see clearly what is included rather than being told vaguely that your website is "SEO optimised".
Want your website built on the right foundations?
Foundational SEO is included with every Business Workshop website, so your site doesn't launch with the basics missing.
